Skylar Laine made it to the ‘American Idol‘ Top 5 and for tonight’s episode (May 2), she had to sing a song by a ’60s artist and a song by a Britpop act. The spunky songstress from Mississippi is peaking when it matters and she could very well end up being the Season 11 winner.

For her ’60s song, the consummate country cutie tore through Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s Vietnam War-era anthem ‘Fortunate Son.’ She certainly countrified it, and while it might seem like a sensitive choice because of the subject matter, Miss Laine rocked it and was quite respectful when doing so. The judges summed up her performance best: she was born to be on that stage. We aren’t going to deny that.

For her Britpop song, she sang ‘You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me’ by Dusty Springfield, slowing things down a few notches. She still delivered every note of the song with the same power as when she is stomping around, singing an upbeat number. She added some twang, but proved she is not just a country gal. It was emotionally resonant through and through.

The judges said that she is peaking at the right time and asked, “You wanna win, don’t you?” Oh yeah, we definitely think Skylar Laine is in it to win it. This young firecracker was born with the performer gene. It’s in her DNA.
