Rik Mikals

I’ve been up and down the radio dial as the famous "WKRP in Cincinnati" line goes. I started right out of high school in 1988 in my hometown of Clarkston, Wash at KCLK-FM, a country station, and from there moved all over Idaho, Montana, California and Washington state at various radio stations. I worked on KMPS-FM in Seattle in the late 1990s and moved to Yakima in 1998 as program director of 107-3 KFFM. I moved again and again (because I can't seem to keep a job) until I was in Bakersfield, California, and then Tri-Cities, and then back to Yakima, and again to Tri-Cities as morning show host and brand manager of 98.3 The Key. I bought a farm in Prosser a few years back with my wife Megan and we sold it last year and we now live in Kennewick. We have three great dogs named Phoebe, Barkley and Roxy. My son is an aspiring musician and plays, performs and writes original music. I also have a stepson named Kyran who is just starting high school. I’m known for having a never-ending knowledge of pop culture and easily get addicted to TV reality shows. I like "Star Trek," Mustangs (the car) and '80s music which is the era I seem to be stuck in. I’m also a huge comic book fan, having a comic collection easily totaling more than 6,000 comics with some rare comic books thrown in for good measure.

Should Homeowners Be Limited On How Many Vehicles Are Parked On The Street [POLL]

A co-worker of mine has an issue, and he didn't cause it. He lives in a neighborhood where two houses have 11 cars and one motorbike parked in their driveways and on the street right in front of his house. I think there should be an ordinance that protects a homeowner from another homeowner's excessive number of parked vehicles.

Daredevil Tyler Bradt Goes Over Palouse Falls In A Kayak [VIDEO]

Palouse Falls is a popular road trip for most of us from Yakima. We are in awe of how massive and beautiful the waterfall is at Palouse Falls, even a little intimidated by its majestic stature. But Kayak daredevil Tyler Bradt has a different view -- he wants to break the world record of kayaking off the massive waterfall.

Can he do it?

Did Your Name Make It On A Coca-Cola Bottle This Summer?

I know the name "Rick" has made it on a Coca-Cola bottle before but I'm not so sure we'll ever see a "Rik" on a bottle. I'm totally bummed about that.

It's almost summer and Coca-Cola has started putting names on the side of Coca-Cola bottles again.

I know I didn't make it on a bottle but did you? I've got an easy way for you to check.

Insane Inflatables 5 K Brings The Fun For Families [VIDEO]

It was a beautiful day for Insane Inflatables at the Benton County Fairgrounds In Kennewick, Washington. I grabbed some snap shots and some video and even had a chance to go the top of the start and announce a wave and ended up getting knocked over.

At the top of the inflatable, it was like being on a waterbed (if you remember those) to keep my balance was tough but fun.

Roots and Vines Festival Returns To Downtown Yakima [VIDEOS]

The weather looks great for this weekend and if you are looking for a musical escape, why not attend the Roots and Vines Festival this afternoon?

You'll expand your musical tastes with several well known Pacific Northwest based  musicians and Brothers Comatose based out of San Francisco. I'd suggest checking out Sleepy Man which looks like a boy band for banjos. They are amazing in concert.

You know all those ties your dad has received for Father's Day over the years? Well, this might be an occasion for him to actually WEAR one of them.

How’s That Mt. Saint Helens Ash Investment Holding Up?

I was ten years old when Mount Saint Helens exploded. It was May 18th, 1980 and a perfectly blue sky became darkened by ash and soot within hours. My family was on a fishing trip in Idaho and we turned around and headed home for safety.

Adults and kids scooped up as much of the ash possible as sentimental reminders or hopes of cashing in and making a profit.

It's 2017, let's see how that Mt. Saint Helens ash is holding up as an investment.

That Mother’s Day Song That I’ll Always Remember [VIDEO]

My first radio station job was in the summer of '88 and I was working at a small FM country music station in my hometown of Clarkston, Washington. Radio Broadcasting was so different back in those days, it was before compact discs and computers,so we played music off vinyl records called 45's.

I remember my mom kept calling the request line over and over for a certain song, it was her favorite at the time and it's a perfect song to celebrate with on this Mother's Day.

Nope... It's not "Mama Tried" by Merle Haggard.
