No matter how diligent you think you are when it comes to getting to know a new love's character and past history, you can still get an unpleasant surprise.

Take this week's Couples Court case, for example ...

Dear Rik and Michele:
I've been dating my new girlfriend for two months and feel like we're falling in love. She recently checked her emails on my computer and forgot to log off. Although I know I shouldn't have looked, I couldn't resist reading several of her emails.
I was shocked when I read one that detailed her arrest on a November shoplifting charge. This puts me in a difficult position because I'm in law enforcement and plan on taking her to my department's spring picnic.
The officer who arrested her is not a friend of mine, but does work in the department on another shift. What do I do? Should I say anything? I'm confused!
I did a background check on my girl when we first met, but didn't find any arrests. It turns out she was arrested under her married name. I know her by her maiden name.
Should Judge Michele Mathews lay down the law on this one? What do you think, jurors?
