‘Dumbo’ Live-Action Movie Coming From the Writer of ‘Transformers 4′

Dumbo Live Action Remake

Here’s some news that makes about as much sense as an elephant being able to fly: Disney is developing a live-action movie based on their classic animated film ‘Dumbo,’ with ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction‘ writer Ehren Kruger penning the script. We’ll give you a minute to collect your thoughts.

THR reports that Disney is in the process of developing a live-action version of ‘Dumbo,’ based on their classic 1941 animated film about a young elephant who is bullied for having big ears. When his mother tries to defend him, she’s taken away (stop crying), and Dumbo teams up with a little mouse who convinces him that if he uses a feather, he’ll be able to fly.

The studio has hired Ehren Kruger, who most recently penned the script for ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ (and who is also credited on the second and third ‘Transformers’ films) to write the screenplay for their live-action ‘Dumbo’ movie, which will incorporate a parallel story about a human family, presumably featuring a deranged child who convinces himself he can fly.

According to the report, Disney says that with “the current state of CG technology, live-action movies featuring a soaring pachyderm (or any animal for that matter) are a viability.” And who knows more about writing for huge, fictional CG characters than Kruger, who has now dedicated many years of his life to the service of Michael Bay and his giant CG robots?

Of course, this isn’t the only classic property Disney is transforming into a live-action film — there was the recent ‘Maleficent,’ and who could forget ‘Alice and Wonderland,’ which has a sequel in the works. Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Cinderella‘ will hit theaters next year, Jon Favreau is directing ‘The Jungle Book,’ and Bill Condon recently signed on for ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ No word yet on who will direct ‘Dumbo,’ but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for Michael Bay.
