DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_1738" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Photo by CWU"][/caption]    CWU Chamber Choir & Friends      CWU Chamber Choir & Friends    Sunday\, January 30 – 4 pm    The Central Washington University Chamber Choir will present a concert of classical music on Sunday\, January 30 at 4 pm.    “Stunning”\, “thrilling”\,    “a sound of liquid gold”\,    “my socks are officially knocked off”    are some of the descriptors used by audience members after recent Chamber Choir appearances    Joining the choir will be the talented singers from the Yakima College Choir under the direction of Yakima’s own Dr. Scott Peterson.    Rounding out the 90 minute concert are 5 CWU musicians playing the first movement of Cesar Franck’s Piano Quintet (for piano and string quartet).     The repertoire to be presented:     Hear my prayer\, O Lord –  Purcell (1659-1695)    The Lord’s Prayer –  Sheppard (c. 1515-1558)    Lobet Den Herrn (BWV 230)- J.S. Bach (1685-1750)    Svete tihiy – Gretchaninoff (1864-1956)    Bogoroditse Devo –  Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)    Slangpolska efter Byss-Kalle (2005)- arr. Hans Gardemar         YVCC’s choir wll be singing pieces by Renaissance composers Batten\, Certon and Vecchi.    The two choirs wil combine for the final piece of the concert – on Vijay Singh’s “I’ll hear the trumpet sound”               Chamber Choir\, Central Washington University’s premier choir\, is a rigorously auditioned ensemble of 35 experienced choral singers    Since 2006\, when Director of Choral Studies Gary Weidenaar took the baton\, the choir has received invitations to appear at the past two consecutive Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) Conferences\, the prestigious Northwest American Choral Directors Assocation’s 2010 Conference\, and\, in February\, 2011 – the Northwest MENC (Music Educator’s National Conference) Convention.    Chamber Choir regularly programs music from the Renaissance to compositions of the 21st century\, while including music of other cultures as well. Collaborations with composers are common.  In the past 2 years\, Chamber Choir has commissioned 3 works\, by Washington composers Vijay Singh\, Elaine Ross\, and John Muehleisen.  In April\, up-and-coming composer Ola Gjeilo will fly from California to join the choir on piano in recording three of his compositions.    Chamber Choir also presents major works with orchestra. Most recently\, the choir combined with other CWU ensembles in a  concert of  Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana (2010) at Benaroya Hall to over 1500 audience members.  Chamber Choir will present Allen Hovhaness’s Magnificat in Benaroya Hall in March of this year with the CWU Symphony Orchestra on the occasion what would be Hovhaness’s 100th birthday.    The choir is thrilled to be performing at the Seasons for the fourth time in four years.  Over 120 patrons saw the choir in last winter’s 2010 Seasons Concert\, as contrasted with the fifteen hearty audience members who attended their 2008 debut at what has become the annual Chamber Choir and Friends concert in Yakima.

DESCRIPTION:So you think you can dance?    Here's your chance to show Mary Murphy.    She's a choreographer\, ballroom dance champion and judge on the Fox dance competition reality show "So You Think You Can Dance."    And she's coming to Yakima.    Her visit is twofold. She'll be judging "The Mary Murphy Dance Showcase" March 20 at the Capitol Theatre. And March 21\, she's speaking at the YWCA's 17th annual Leadership Luncheon.    Murphy\, 53\, recently disclosed she endured domestic violence during her nine-year marriage to her ex-husband. She first spoke publicly about the abuse in 2009\, following hip-hop singer Chris Brown's domestic violence assault on his then-girlfriend\, R&B singer Rihanna.    Since then\, Murphy has shared her own story on "The Ellen Degeneres Show" and "Larry King Live" as well as with Us Magazine.    Midmonth\, she'll be talking about her experiences at the local luncheon\, a benefit for the Yakima YWCA\, which runs an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence and is also in the process of building longer-term\, transitional housing.    Her talk is titled "Dance Until the Whole World Sees."    During her visit\, Murphy will also serve on a panel of judges -- including Yakima restaurateur John Gasperetti\, YWCA board member Marvalene Broadhead and Gayla Games\, former owner of the Greystone Restaurant -- for her dance showcase. Yakima Mayor Micah Cawley will be the emcee.    The three winners\, one from each age group\, will be presented at the luncheon.    Meantime\, auditions will be held at Glenwood Square all day Saturday. The top 10 dancers from each age group will get to perform in front of Murphy\, part of the original guest judge and choreographer pool when "So You Think You Can Dance" premiered in 2005. She became a permanent judge in 2007.    Murphy's known on the show for her fun forms of praise\, such as calling dancers "hot tamales."    Yakima auditions\, sponsored by the YWCA and Ginger's Dance and Fitness Boutique\, will take place on a first-come\, first-served basis. Soloists will get to perform one-minute routines. Townsquare Media is putting together the greatest Haunted attraction in the Yakima Valley\, “Yakima Haunt”! The Haunt will be open October 11th through Halloween Weekend Nov. 2nd.  The haunt will be open Friday & Saturdays 6pm – 11pm & Halloween night featuring a special group night Thursday\, Oct. 24th. The haunt is geared towards children 13 and older and will be $10 per admission.  Our first year haunt in Pasco\, Washington drew over 6\,000 guests and we expect to see more people through the Yakima Haunt in 2013.
