  • U.S. Representatives Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and Mike Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania have introduced the Animal Welfare in Agricultural Research Act - legislation that would ensure farm animals used in agricultural research at federal research facilities be included in the definition of animal under the Animal Welfare Act.

Blumenauer says USDA research facilities should be held to the same standard as federal research facilities conducting lifesaving disease research when they experiment on farm animals.

The bill was introduced after a New York Times article alleged abuse at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska.
