Do your kids get a weekly allowance? If so, how much?

A new study by American Express Spending and Saving Tracker finds that 79 percent of parents give their school-aged kids $35 a week!

The study found that most parents started giving their kids an allowance by about age 8 for completing chores or getting good grades in school.

Growing up, I was expected to clean the house, take care of my little brother after school, chop wood if needed, mow the lawn and whatever else needed to be done.

I grew up with parents who lived paycheck to paycheck, so they couldn't really afford to give me a weekly allowance. But when my parents where still married, I did get an occasional toy I wanted.

I started working at the age of 15 so that I had money to buy my clothes, pay my car insurance and put gas in my car.

I've never given my kids a weekly allowance. My thought is that it's teaching them to be a part of a community. Plus, as an adult you don't get paid to do your own dishes, clean your own house or do your laundry.

Is a $35 weekly allowance appropriate?
