Jessi Alexander Dishes on Gospel Song That ‘Came Deep From Blake Shelton’s Soul’

In August, shortly after his divorce from Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton shared via Twitter that he had written a song "so important to me I can't believe it," thanking songwriters Jessi Alexander and Jon Randall for their help. On Thursday night at the Life and Songs of Kris Kristofferson event, Alexander provided more details about the song she says "came deep from Blake's soul."

It's a "very special" gospel song, Alexander explains, likening it to Kristofferson's iconic "Why Me Lord."

"He started an incredible song, a gospel song, and asked me and JR to help him finish and we actually worked on the strings today," the songwriter says. "It’s beautiful and moving and I can’t wait for him to tell the story. It’s almost his ‘Why Me Lord’ — it’s very deep to him and to us.”

"It came deep from Blake's soul and we were just glad we got to kind of help him birth it," she adds. Alexander and Shelton also worked together to write a song called "Friends" for Shelton's character in the upcoming Angry Birds movie.

Shelton will release If I'm Honest — what he's calling his most personal album to date — on May 20. The first single is "Came Here to Forget," which seems to highlight his new relationship with Gwen Stefani and the dissolution of his marriage to Lambert.
