Keith Urban better clean one more spot on his mantel full of trophies and awards, as he was asked to become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry!

Tuesday night (April 10), during his annual All for the Hall all-star concert benefiting the Country Music Hall of Fame, Urban seemed a bit suspicious when Vince Gill called fellow Opry members — the Oak Ridge Boys, Rascal Flatts and Diamond Rio — to join him on the stage, carrying an oversized black duffel bag. Gill informed Urban it was a present thanking him for his hospitality for opening the invitation to be part of the annual benefit.

Urban dropped down to his knees to open the bag and unveiled the WMS Grand Ole Opry signature microphone stand. Upon realizing what it was, Urban heard Gill speak the words every country star dreams of hearing: “We would like to invite Keith Urban to be the next member of the Grand Ole Opry!”

A shocked Urban covered his face in amazement as the crowd’s piercing screams filled Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. “Thank you … thank you so much,” he said as he hugged the surrounding members of his new musical family. “I don’t know what to say, but first — yes! Thank you very much to everybody at the Grand Ole Opry who made this possible. I’m shocked. How beautiful for this to happen tonight of all nights.”

Urban’s official induction to the elite Grand Ole Opry is set for Saturday, April 21. The portion of the Opry will be part of GAC’s ‘Noteworthy at the Opry’ special that will air on the network at 9PM ET. Urban’s invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry marks the first time an artist from outside North America has become a member. Congratulations, Keith! Well deserved!

Urban will keep the party going this afternoon (Wednesday, April 11) when he joins the LoCash Cowboys and Jaren Johnston in Nashville to celebrate his recent multi-week chart-topping hit, ‘You Gonna Fly.’ The tune is the fourth single from Urban’s ‘Get Closer’ album. Stay tuned to Taste of Country for our exclusive coverage from the No. 1 party later on in the week.
