Kristian Bush: ‘Sing Along’ Inspired by Mistake Made Looking for Love

Kristian Bush says his new single “Sing Along” was an easy song to write, but it’s excruciating to perform live. For the first time ever he’s putting his personal life under a microscope. There’s no song fiction during the bittersweet mid-tempo cut about loving and losing, and that’s terrifying.

The yearning for a second chance is very real, Bush tells Taste of Country. “I’m six years out of a divorce, and I think it’s time to try to fall in love again,” he says. “I don’t know how to do that and I’m going to make mistakes. And this was a mistake that I made.”

“The best part of me was always you / Like a sunset fading from red to blue / And when I see it, I still think of you,” Bush sings.

Five or six songs led to “Sing Along,” the first single from an upcoming album on Wheelhouse Records. Those may not make the album — Bush says that may not be necessary, but those that do will stay within the theme of being real and honest and raw. That’s not something the male half of Sugarland is used to doing.

“I didn’t really want to be that real, but I don’t think I have a choice,” he says, admitting that his final weeks with his father also influenced his new album. Learn more about that during Part 2 of this interview, which will come on Tuesday.

“Sing Along” begs for an answer to an obvious question: Does Kristian Bush want this girl back? He’s noncommittal, but concedes that he hopes she hears him on the radio. He’d love to run the song to No. 1 for him … and for her.

“This is a really had song to sing without weeping,” he admits. “I don’t usually put my personal life in the front seat of the car, next to the radio station. But I did with this one and I think that’s what’s happening with this whole set of songs.”
