According to the U.S. Department of Labor's website this is what Labor Day means:

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

But that's not the way I heard it when I was growing up.

I was always told that Labor Day was about giving birth and that the holiday was in my honor,  because my birthday is Sept. 4. Dang Grandpa and his jokes.

Now that I've grown up, though, I've learned along the way what Labor Day is really all about. For many Americans, the true meaning now is of course a three-day weekend for camping or late-summer barbecuing.

Oh, and lots of places are closed.
