Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton didn’t expect to win the Female and Male Vocalist trophies at the CMA Awards this year, they admitted to reporters backstage Wednesday night in Nashville. It’s the second consecutive year the couple, who got married in May, claimed those awards. “Last year when it happened, in the back of my mind, I had that idea that maybe I’ll win this because I’ve been doing this so long and the industry probably feels sorry for me a little bit!” Shelton joked. “And maybe I got the underdog vote. But this year, I didn’t think I could get away with that. It means a lot to me because for the first time I feel secure in the country music industry because it’s such a fickle industry.” Lambert said she was “surprised” and “humbled.” She added, “I had a great year last year. I won three CMAs on my birthday. So I was just here to be here and to be a part of it. But I was totally expecting someone else to take this home this year.” Miranda is all over the radio now with her song “Baggage Claim,” and she says that being married to Blake hasn’t changed her love for songs about love gone wrong, but it is changing her thinking about music in general – at least a little.
