Change Is in the Air in Season 1, Episode 5 of ‘Nashville’

Nashville Episode 5
ABC

Change was in the air for most of the major characters on ABC’s ‘Nashville‘ Wednesday night (Nov. 7). In a well-written episode titled ‘Move It on Over,’ some of the principals were deciding on new changes, while others were struggling to deal with the changes brought about by old choices.

Last week’s episode left Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panetierre) in a tough spot. This week kicked off with Juliette in an all-night recording session, driving her band and producers to the edge by refusing to wrap up a track they felt was finished — because she didn’t want to go home and face her drug addict mother. That was probably a good call, since when she did return home, she found dear old Mom passed out in bed with some strange man she’d picked up, forcing an embarrassing confrontation in front of her neighbors.

Juliette enlisted help from Deacon, who offered to step in because of his own past struggles with addiction. And because Juliette’s mom is a longtime fan of his, she allowed herself to be talked into entering the same rehab program that worked for him — but not before losing control and slapping Juliette, who later admitted that she’d been physically abusive off and on during her childhood.

Deacon (Charles Esten) and Rayna (Connie Britton) were still dealing with their decision not to work together anymore in this episode of ‘Nashville,’ which isn’t as easy as it seems, since they’ve written so many songs together. That means ongoing business — in this case, Rayna’s reluctant decision to film a commercial using one of their co-written hits meant Deacon would have to sign off on changes to the lyric, which he refused to do, causing even more friction between the longtime friends and former lovers. Triggered by that, as well as helping Juliette’s mom with her addiction, Deacon ended up getting arrested after a brawl and nearly compromised his own sobriety.

Season 1, Episode 5 of ‘Nashville’ also brought more tension between Scarlett (Clare Bowen) and Avery (Jonathan Jackson), who are still trying to work through his jealousy since she and Gunnar (Sam Palladio) scored a publishing deal. His offer to back them up by playing guitar at an audition for Lady Antebellum‘s producer went horribly wrong when he stole the spotlight with his guitar playing, causing another round of confrontations.

Meanwhile, we finally found out what Teddy (Eric Close) has been hiding during his mayoral campaign. He revealed to Lamar (Powers Boothe) that when a land development deal of his started to come undone, he “floated” $2 million dollars to get it done — a nicer-sounding term for embezzlement, which Peggy (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) was also involved in. And though Lamar assured his son-in-law and political puppet that he would take care of everything, last night’s episode ended with more potential trouble for Teddy and Peggy when a photographer surreptitiously photographed them at one of their late-night clandestine meetings — photographs that, if made public, are sure not to sit well with either his constituency or his wife.
