Has the word “Oscar” been thrown around enough lately in regards to Denzel Washington and Viola Davis’s Fences? No? We can keep saying it some more? Good. The latest trailer for the film, adapted from August Wilson’s play and directed by Washington himself, shows off the kind of vibrant acting that these two won Tonys for in the first place.

Fences, adapted from the play which Wilson won both a Tony and a Pulitzer Prize for, follows Troy Maxon (Washington), a former baseball player who now works as a garbage collector in Pittsburg in the 1950s. His son Cory (Jovan Adepo) wants to be an athlete like his father, but Troy does everything he can to discourage him from that path, perhaps because of how the sport he played in his own past got him nothing and nowhere. Viola Davis plays Troy’s wife Rose who watches her husband’s relationship with their son sour over the years. Troy no doubt thinks he’s helping his son, but to Cory, he’s just holding him back. “Some people build fences to keep people out, and other people build fences to keep people in.”

Washington and Davis reprise their roles in the film from their 2010 Broadway revival of the play, and if they’re half as good as they were onstage, it’s safe to say that the awards will soon start pouring in. They both won Tonys for Best Actor and Actress, and are just as dynamic onscreen, able to imbue every role they’ve played with nuance and grace. These two are actors to watch, and Fences may be the film to beat come awards season.

Fences is out in New York and Los Angeles on December 16, and goes wide December 25.
