The Yakima Police Department will mark National Peace Officer Memorial Day with a special ceremony this morning to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The event begins at 11 a.m. in front of the Yakima police headquarters at 200 S. Third St. The YPD Honor Guard will stage a short ceremony.

President John F. Kennedy established National Peace Officer Memorial Day in 1962.

Nationally, 105 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty last year, including one in Washington state.
