Rascal Flatts' latest single, "I Like the Sound of That," boasts an impressive trio of writers: Jesse Frasure, Meghan Trainor and Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay. Two of the three have careers as artists themselves, so when the Flatts first heard the tune, they were dumbfounded that neither wanted to record the song themselves.

"I actually called Jason Owen, Dan + Shay’s manager, and said, ‘Why aren’t they cutting this song? It doesn't make any sense to me. This is a smash,'" Jay DeMarcus recalled to The Boot and other reporters at a recent media event. "But he was kind enough to give it to us."

It's a good thing, too: One listen to "I Like the Sound of That" had all three band members hooked.

"I love the chorus. I thought the chorus was extremely, extremely hooky," DeMarcus notes. "We did change [it a little]: We sped it up a little bit from the demo, and the bazooka hook in the beginning is ours; we came up with that. We tweaked a few lyrics here and there. But the chorus just stayed in your skull."

Mooney, who together with Frasure and Trainor also wrote "DJ Tonight" from Rascal Flatts' newest album Rewind, continues to send the country trio new songs as they work on their next album.

"I’m so glad he doesn’t like what he writes," DeMarcus jokes. "Keep sending it."

"I Like the Sound of That" is available for download on iTunes.
