You've probably noticed all of the road construction around Yakima these days, but you might not realize that the work benefits more than just drivers. The city is also bringing most of the sidewalks adjacent to this project into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.Ever since I took office, a number of citizens have advocated for the City Council to make ADA improvements to our infrastructure, and in some cases I agree. The problem is always finding the money to pay for those improvements.

What makes smart government is planning those expenses when funding becomes available. The city could have saved money by not making sidewalk improvements, but that would do nothing for the long-term issues of Yakima's old infrastructure.

I'm proud that we are making updates as part of our grind and overlay project, and the citizens who brought this to our attention should feel good, too. Their voices were heard, making this project a win-win for all involved.
