There is no denying the success of Little Big Town's "Girl Crush" as the song continues to receive awards and recognition. Monday night (April 18), "Girl Crush" was named Song of the Year by the Association of Independent Music Publishers at the AIMP Awards.

During the ceremony, where artists covered the award-winning songs, Sam Hunt performed a stripped down version of "Girl Crush." Accompanied by his bandmates on acoustic guitars, Hunt soothed the Ryman Auditorium audience with his soulful take on the song.

Hunt is no stranger to cover songs, as he has been known to perform several covers during his own concerts. Recently, he sang a portion of Kane Brown's "Used to Love You Sober" during his set at Tortuga Music Festival in Fort Lauderdale, much to the surprise of Brown.

“About to go on at my show and get a text of Sam Hunt doing my song used to love you sober at a music festival!! This is crazy,” Brown wrote on his Facebook page when he received the news.

Hunt's set included a performance of several cover songs including Dierks Bentley's “Somewhere on a Beach” and Thomas Rhett's “T-Shirt.”

Previously, Hunt covered Merle Haggard's "The Way I Am" at the All for the Hall benefit concert in Nashville. As he explained, he decided to perform the song the day before Haggard died. When he heard the news the following day of Haggard's death on April 6, he was saddened.

"It sent chills up my spine. It gave me this really eerie feeling,” Hunt recalled. “It was a sad day for country music, but it made me realize how grateful I am to be able to do what I’m doing. It made me realize how grateful I am for Merle Haggard, all these boys on stage behind me and all the people who have come before me in country music who have paved this road for me."

Hunt is said to be working on his next album.
