After this weekend’s rookie mini camp, coach Pete Carroll says 2012 third round draft pick Russell Wilson showed enough to be in the mix to compete for the starting quarterback job.

Incumbent starter Tavaris Jackson is a six year NFL veteran who showed incredible toughness playing through injuries last season. Matt Flynn was the most sought after quarterback in free agency this year. Josh Portis was the Seahawks third quarterback last season, but didn’t see any action after the preseason. It was assumed that Jackson and Flynn would battle out for the starter’s job this summer. That is until Russell Wilson hit the practice field last Friday.

For the weekend, Wilson took 500-plus snaps and threw close to 400 passes. Because the coaches wanted to see – and needed to see – just what the Wilson could bring to the competition.

Coach Pete Carroll told reporters “we need to see where he fits in with these guys. That’s an amazing load that we threw on him. But he handled it like he’s been here. So that was a great first sign, just about his willingness to prepare and his ability to hold onto the information.”

So, it looks like its going to be a very interesting summer for Seahawks quarterbacks.
