So ... do I take away my kids' participation awards?

This recently became a discussion due to James Harrison, who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers as an outside linebacker. He posted on Instagram recently that he was taking away his kids' participation trophies because he believes his kids should earn real trophies.

All four of my kids have received participation trophies. I've never seen this as a negative -- they look forward to receiving these awards at the end of the season. It makes them feel proud to be part of the team. Even if they weren't the best player on the team, it makes them feel recognized that they played to the best of their ability.

It hasn't affected my two older boys in a negative way. The are both driven, goal-oriented, respectful young men.

Should kids get participation awards?
