‘SNL’ Season 40: Cast Member Brooks Wheelan Fired

SNL Cast Brooks Wheelan Fired Season 40

After all the turnover season 39 of ‘SNL‘ brought to the cast, between Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis and Seth Meyers departing, as well as controversial additions like that of Sasheer Zamata, the 40th anniversary season of the long-running NBC sketch comedy was expected to bring with it a few changes. Now, the first of the season 39 freshmen have been cut, as cast member Brooks Wheelan announces he won’t return this fall.

While additional turnover for the year had been expected for August, Wheelan announced his dismissal from ‘SNL’ Monday evening over Twitter, seemingly in good spirits:

Wheelan had spent the year somewhat underused among the crop of season 39 additions, which also included Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Mike O’Brien and Noel Wells, with head writer Colin Jost replacing Seth Meyers on the Weekend Update desk. Actress Sasheer Zamata was added midway through the season, while Leslie Jones and LaKendra Tookes were brought on as writers.

In particular, critics noted that Wheelan seemed most comfortable with his own stand-up rather than any memorable characters, and even Vulture’s comprehensive analysis of the season placed the 27 year-old comedian in only 4 starring sketch roles over the year. In addition to the expected turnover next month, ‘SNL’ will also likely lose Nasim Pedrad to her starring role in FOX’s ‘Mulaney,’ though we’ll at least have the three-hour 40th anniversary special to look forward to.

Sad news, with potentially more cuts on the way, but what say you? Are you disappointed to see Brooks Wheelan let go from ‘SNL,’ or will the cast be better off? See for yourself how overlooked Wheelan was in the sketch below, and give us your thoughts in the comments!
