‘SNL’ and Edward Norton Create a Wes Anderson Horror Movie
Wes Anderson’s incredibly distinctive style has been parodied before, but rarely with the skill that ‘SNL‘ and host Edward Norton displayed in the most recent episode of everyone’s favorite comedy variety show. A pre-recorded bit, the fake trailer for ‘The Midnight Coterie of Sinister Intruders,’ imagines what an Anderson-directed horror movie would look like and the results are near perfect.
Borrowing mostly from ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ and ‘Moonrise Kingdom,’ the video takes the standard home invasion horror movie set-up and gives it a massive injection of Anderson’s particular brand of whimsy. Norton stars as Owen Wilson, pulling off a perfect impression under a massive blonde wig, who finds his home under siege from a group of masked killers (who come armed with knives, a falcon and a record player). Alec Baldwin narrates as the bit segues from playful jab to playful jab, making fun of Anderson’s twee style while the cast perfectly captures his actors’ typical droll deliveries.
It’s the kind of thing that could have come off as mean-spirited or cruel, but it’s so detailed and spot-on that it could only have been created by people who have actually seen and enjoyed Anderson’s work. Heck, Baldwin and Norton have worked with him before, so they’re in on the joke more than anyone else. Although the rest of the episode was fairly bland, this fake trailer already feels like one of our favorite ‘SNL’ sketches in ages.
