Thomas Rhett Wins Song of the Year at ACCAs

Thomas Rhett took home Song of the Year honors at the American Country Countdown Awards on Sunday night (May 1).

The singer was present live onstage to sing "Die a Happy Man," the winning song. The song is one of the hit singles from his most recent album, Tangled Up, and it's especially important to the singer-songwriter because it was inspired by his wife, Lauren, whom he's known since they were in school together.

“I’ve written love songs but never to the extent of that personal,” he tells Taste of Country. “We strictly wrote that song about me and my wife’s relationship.”

He adds, “I just think this song shows how me and Lauren love each other, and I hope this song is an encouragement to other married couples or people that are dating.”

He gave a simple, heartfelt acoustic performance of the song, which also took home Single of the Year at the ACM Awards.

Rhett beat out “Stay a Little Longer” from Brothers Osborne, Luke Bryan and Karen Fairchild's duet, “Home Alone Tonight,” Bryan's “Strip It Down” and “Homegrown” from Zac Brown Band to win the award, one of the biggest of the evening.

"Oh my gosh thank you, to country music fans, thank you so much," he gushed in his acceptance speech after performing. "I gotta thank my lord and savior, Jesus Christ, for letting me be here, and my lovely wife Lauren." He also thanked the songwriters, his record label, management and the wrapped up by thanking the fans again.
