What Does Popping Tags Mean?

My kids love to listen to another radio station that is in the same building as 92.9 The Bull. Can you guess which one it is? Ding ... Ding ... 107.3 KFFM

One of their favorite songs is that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, "Thrift Shop" song. When I first heard the song I didn't really listen to the words, but heard the part that says, "I'm gonna pop some tags. Only got twenty dollars in my pocket."

My first thought was WT?? Is that song about stealing clothes? I don't want my kids listening to a song about that!

When I picked up my 15 year old son from school I asked him what does "popping tags" mean? Does that mean that they are stealing the clothes? He just laughed at me and said, "Uh mom, listen to the song. It's about buying clothes at the thrift store."

We both started laughing. My ego was a little bruised because normally I'm pretty hip and cool!
