Who Should Pay for Special Event Security in Yakima? [MAYOR'S BLOG]

sunfair parade
Tonight, at the Yakima City Council meeting, the group will consider a special events policy related to security. In specific, Yakima police overtime.

The city currently spends $50,000 on Police overtime for special events such as the Sunfair parade and other community events like the PNWU 5K fun run and the May Day march.

The question is, who should pay for what? The police only have so much money in their overtime budget and you would think that it should go toward fighting crime not guarding a street during a parade.

But don’t you want some of your money to go towards positive events that the entire community enjoys?

The City Council will discuss the issue tonight at city hall at 6pm. What do you think?
