A Calgary school has decided to ban the honor roll system. Students in grades 7 thru 9 will no longer compete for the honor roll.

School officials sent home a letter explaining the decision, "Awards eventually lose their luster to students who get them, while often hurting the self-esteem and pride of those who do not receive a certificate."

The letter also cites the work of education guru Alfie Kohn, who contends that "dangling rewards in front of children are at best ineffective, and at worst counterproductive."

There were concerns among those attending the forum that honours and awards programs can sow jealousy among classmates, cause undue stress and spur children who are top achievers to give up because they never win.

I think this is a load of crap! I have a straight A student and one that has struggled to get B's and C's. I see both sides of the coin.

I'm so tired of "everyone's a winner" crap as well! In the real world it does matter if you win or lose. That's life and we need to prepare our kids for what's in the real world not some make believe fantasy land where everyone is equal.
