Yakima had better get ready for some serious tennis this weekend at The Smash, Yakima's official day for tennis. I will be on hand to celebrate the opening of the new Yakima Tennis Club clubhouse, which was constructed after a fire leveled the old one last year.

Here's what's going down this Saturday (Aug. 22):

10 a.m.-noon -- Tennis Free For All. Free and open to the public for ages 4 and older at Yakima Tennis Club’s outdoor facility, at 516 N. 35th Ave. Free lessons, fast serve contest, tennis obstacle course, racket demos and more! Sponsored by YTC, Sporthaus and Wilson Tennis.

5:30- 8:30 p.m. -- The Smash Bash. Spectators attend free of charge. Hors d’oeuvres and drink specials available for $15. Proceeds to support YTC’s community tennis programming.
Local tennis professionals and celebrities join forces to show that tennis truly is for EVERYONE! Enjoy seeing tennis played at the highest levels and have a giggle or two watching Mayor Micah Cawley take on Coucilwoman Maureen Adkison.

Kevin Young, former YTC professional, will be in the umpire’s chair for the evening. The community is encouraged to come out and celebrate The Smash – Yakima’s official day of tennis!
