John Riggs was born and raised in Yakima. He moved away from Washington state for about 10 years, but moved back home, bringing along his wife and three kids. You'll find John in town snapping photos when he's covering new business openings, especially restaurants. He loves to help spread the word, and to encourage folks to shop local first. John also loves to travel, always looking for quick weekend getaways, attending events, and fan expos around the country. Don't be too shy to say, "Hi!"

Don’t Miss ‘High School Musical’ by the Davis H.S. Students
In the time-honored tradition of high schools doing musicals, it only made sense that, eventually, there would be a high school musical called High School Musical. The movie version jumpstarted Zac Efron's career and was, I have to figure, the first musical many children saw for the first time from the kids who grew up during that 2000s Disney era...
Best Ways to Respond When Someone Says, “You’re Ugly” in Washington
How are you at comebacks? Though it seems teasing or saying things like this was more promonent in school, the action continues into adulthood. Maybe not specifically the words in direct order but something as simple as someone saying, "You're ugly," certainly you can back that up with something better...

The Stonehenge in WA is Always Worth a Quick Stop
It's not too often we get a lot of roadside attractions. I remember going on family vacations all in my dad's station wagon or minivan driving all day to get to our destination but, every so often, stopping by some Mystery Spot in California where gravity seems to work in an odd way...
If Your Kids Love Mozzarella Sticks, They’ll Love these Mozzarella Twists in Yakima
I mean, what's not to love about mozzarella sticks? Breaded, fried cheesesticks with a red sauce to dip as needed. It's a popular favorite for kids and grown-ups, too. If I happen to be at a restaurant with my kids, chances are they'll want an order of these...
What are Spider Rolls and Where Can I Find Them in Yakima

You just sat down at a nice sushi restaurant in Yakima or anywhere else, really. You're looking over the rolls you can get. You see familiar rolls like a California Roll or Shrimp Roll. You keep looking and you find ones called Philly Rolls or Hollywood Rolls as well...
West Valley Spring Flea Market Returns June 1

Oregon Has One of the Biggest Arcades in the United States
Video arcades seem to be more of a thing of yester-year. We had a few growing up in Yakima like Jolly Joker at the Yakima Mall, we had a place called Mean Machine, there was an arcade at Valley Mall and, of course, growing up in that time they had a video game or two or pinball at just about every mini-mart, restaurant, gas station, laundry mat -- just about everywhere...
Krispy Kreme Welcomes Kit Kat-themed Doughnuts
There are no lack of reasons to visit Krispy Kreme any time of year. You can never go wrong with their original but it's fun to see what themed doughnuts they have throughout the year. When not in a specific season like Halloween or Christmas they have other fun themes as well; sometimes tying into an existing brand...
Oregon’s Child Care Cost is Basically Unaffordable
There was a time when I started having children, myself. After they were of a certain age where it was okay for my wife to work again, we did the math and realized we'd save money if she didn't work as the cost of child care, even some 10+ years ago, was outrageous...
The Washington State Spring Fair is Here (well, in Puyallup, but still!)
The Washington State Fair in Puyallup, WA, does something interesting that many other state fairs don't do, they have a supplemental fair in the spring. Like many fairs around the country, the state or even local and county fairs around the United States are often a last chance bit of fun before it gets too cold to do anything outside...
