Disease-Carrying Mosquitoes Bringing ‘Break-Bone Fever’ to WA
It seems there's a new illness every so often to be concerned over. From bird flu to swine flu to the dreaded ebolavirus and beyond, there's always new reasons to wash your hands, keep clean and avoid contact with most everything and every one.
The latest one coming to the Washington State and the US in general is called Dengue Fever, also sometimes called Break-Bone Fever.
It sounds way worse than it is, but it still doesn't sound fun at all.
Dengue Fever is being carried by mosquitoes from the tropics and subtropical areas here to Washington State with cases on the rise as days go by according to KHQ.
According to the Washington State Department of Health, it's not that mosquitoes from those areas are coming to WA but rather people visiting these countries including the Pacific Islands, South America, Central America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
According to the World Health Organization, Dengue Virus is mostly without noticeable symptoms. However, some cases can come with a fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and in some cases even a rash. This may only last a week or two until you naturally get better.
There's no specific way to treat Dengue Fever so it's usually treated with over-the-counter pain medication.
WHO also says in severe cases it can also be fatal. That's in severe cases.
Again, best to do what you can to avoid mosquitoes in the first place.
If you do plan on traveling out of the country, make sure you check for any health-risks on the WA Department of Health's website before you go.
