Discovery Lab School Learns They Are Being Dismantled at the End of This School Year
Discovery Lab School in Yakima got some really terrible news today. Faculty, staff, students, and parents were given the news that as of the end of the school year of 2022, Discovery Lab School would be switching to a new format. This new format erases the entire first grade through eighth grade curriculum experience that is in place now.
Yakima School District Superintendent Dr. Trevor Greene informed students and families that the school would now become an Early Learning Center instead of a public school in the Yakima district. This means that all students currently enrolled will now need to go to a different school beginning the 2022 to 2023 school year.
All students will be reassigned to their boundary school within the Yakima School District and they will need to fill out a transfer form. All of the remaining staff will be given the option to relocate to another school within the Yakima School District pending any open positions.
The reasons given for the sudden change amount to a lack of funding available to keep the school running as well as what has been described as decreased enrollment in the Discovery Lab School experience.
This is heartbreaking news for many students, families, teachers, and administrators but Superintendent Greene says this option is the best choice because there is a dire need for more Early Learning facilities in Yakima.
I have wanted my daughter to go to Discovery Lab School for the past 3 years and when I finally got the chance to get her enrolled, I was told that all the open spots were taken. I fought hard to get Willow enrolled in Discovery Lab School this year even though she was already enrolled at McKinley Elementary. After several attempts, I finally was able to get her enrolled into the school and so far she has had such a wonderful time and has an amazing 5th grade teacher, Mr. Hernandez, and principal, Principal Anna Marie Dufault.
I wish everyone well and that this terrible news will somehow turn out to be the best thing that could happen for all of the students, teachers, staff, and administrators at Discovery Lab!
Shattering news for the staff, families, and students.
