With summer on the way out, I thought I’d take time to compile what I think are the five best end of summer summer songs of all time!
Boys Of Summer {Don Henley} (1985)
Summer has always been metaphor for a care-free time of innocence that we have since passed. In this classic rock staple, Henley drives through an empty beach town after summer, remembering an old lover and a sense of innocence that he can no longer reach.
Stone In Love {Journey} (1981)
To driving guitars, and the soaring vocals of Steve Perry; this incredible and underrated tune from Journey also reflects on long lost love. The song reflects on a summer spent with a “blue jean girl” and how the memories are carved into stone!
A Summer Song {Chad and Jeremy} (1964)
"They say that all good things must end someday, autumn rains must fall”. Chad and Jeremy’s 1964 “lo-fi” and unexpected hit, again about saying goodbye to a summer love, strikes a chord as we are transitioning seasons.
Against The Wind {Bob Seger} (1980)
Bob Seger got the title and metaphor behind this iconic hit from running fall high school cross country! The song is about the loss of innocence in adulthood and preserving through all of life’s hardships that hit like a biting cold fall wind!
End of the Innocence {Don Henley} (1989)
While not related to summer, this song always feels particularly relevant as we enter the darker colder portion of the year. Not only that, but the harsh political realities we seem to be facing on both sides of the aisle during this period seem to be taking us into a darker more chaotic chapter of history.
