Past School Violence in Yakima Spurs Increased Focus on Emergency Preparedness
Moxee Elementary School is set to conduct an emergency training exercise on March 24, aimed at enhancing safety protocols and emergency response procedures.
MAKING SURE KIDS STAY SAFE WHILE LEARNING
The exercise happens from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and is designed to test communication and coordination among various emergency agencies. The event will not disrupt regular school operations. According to a news release, several agencies will be involved, including the Yakima County Sheriff's Office and the Moxee Police Department. The goal is to make sure in the event of a real emergency, the school and responders can work together to protect students and staff.

YOU'LL HEAR SIRENS ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT
If you live near the school in Moxee don't be alarmed when you hear emergency vehicle sirens and responses in the area on the day of the exercise. The sounds are part of the simulation and are intended to improve overall emergency preparedness.
This event is part of broader efforts across schools nationwide to improve safety measures following concerns about student safety in recent years.
A SCHOOL SHOOTING IN YAKIMA
The timing is also prompted by heightened awareness after a tragic shooting at Yakima's Eisenhower High School in March 2022, where a 16-year-old student was fatally shot during an altercation in the school parking lot. The incident happened at 40th and Tieton and involved a 15-year-old suspect who was arrested by Yakima Police. An 18-year-old was also injured in the shooting and treated at Multicare Yakima Memorial Hospital.
PREPARING FOR THE WORST
School officials and law enforcement continue to prioritize safety initiatives to prevent such tragedies and make a secure environment for all students. The upcoming emergency drill at Moxee Elementary is a proactive step in that ongoing effort by local authorities. .
