As speed emphasis patrols continue Yakima Police have some tips to pass on to drivers who are stopped but aren't sure if it's a real police officer. First they say if the police vehicle is unmarked it will still be equipped with flashing red and blue lights as well as a audible siren.

IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT AN OFFICER JUST ASK

Authorities also say whether the officer is uniformed or not they will identify themselves. If they don't do that they say drivers have the right to request to verify or speak with a supervisor.

POLICE EMPHASIS PATROLS CONTINUE

Police say drivers need to know that information because of the large number of vehicle stops being made in Yakima every week.
During the week of February 26 through March 4 Officers made a total of 582 traffic stops and issued 218 citations. They also investigated 31 collisions with 22 the result of drivers not stopping for a red light.

THE NUMBERS ARE CONSISTENT THE WEEK BEFORE

During the week of February 19 through February 25 Officers investigated 32 collisions with 14 involving drivers who didn't stop for a red light.
During the week of February 26 through March 4, 10 driver were arrested for driving impaired. 9 were arrested the week before.Police say there's no plan to end the patrols anytime soon. Capt. Jay Seely says the patrols are now part of the plan on how the department handles daily traffic.
