It was 1971! The Carpenters were hot, Three Dog Night was hot, but the month of August was sweltering. 3 of our hottest August days occurred in 1971 and to start our list off was August 9th where the high reached 108!

Oh, what I forgot to mention was the fashion style that peaked in '71: hot pants. Quite fitting as Yakimanians sweated out another day of 108 degree temps!

#3: August 4, 1961

Our 44th president was born in Hawaii, Patsy Cline fans were falling to pieces but Yakimanians were melting. The temp had climbed into the triple digits two days earlier and peaked on this day again at 108 degrees fahrenheit!

#2: August 19, 1897

Take a minute and imagine...Yakima before air conditioning. In August 1897, Yakima was a ranch frontier town with dirt streets and wood and brick storefronts. On the 19th, the temperature skyrocketed to a blistering 108 degrees! Hundreds of residents flocked to the river as their only way to cool down. Surprisingly, we have no record of any heat related deaths which is surprising due to the amount we hear about today when we see this kind of heat.
