According to Bureau of Justice Statistics, one in every 10 people were a victim of identity theft. Those stats are from 2021, so you can imagine it’s much worse today.

I have been part of that percentage. 3 different times.

It's a very confusing and scary occurrence that leaves you paranoid every time you swipe your card at a gas station or grocery store.

Or giving your card to the wait staff to pay your restaurant bill.

Even checking your mailbox can bring anxiety.

The truth is, you can do everything right, and still fall victim, but the preventative steps go a long way in safeguarding your personal information.

That's where the annual Shreds and Meds Day, presented by Safe Yakima Valley, local law enforcement and Yakima Country Crime Stoppers, can really help!

What, When, & Where is Shreds & Meds Day?

"The safe destruction of documents reduces the risk of identity theft and safely discarding unwanted/unused medications reduces the risk of youth experimenting with prescription pills."

- Safe Yakima Valley

Gather your personal documents that are no longer needed, as well as your unused, unneeded, and expired medicine and bring them to the Yakima Chamber of Commerce (located at 10 N 9th Street in Yakima) on Saturday, April 26th, from 9 am to 1 pm.

This event is free, but donations are welcomed.

The amount of documents you can bring to shred is limited due to shred truck space.

There is no limit on the amount of medicine you would like to dispose of, no questions asked.

Yakima Shreds & Meds 2024's Event!

According to Safe Yakima Valley, the last event (held in October of 2024) was a huge success!

Filling a shred truck and collecting over 400 pounds of unused medicine, and most importantly, keeping those pills out of small hands, and off the streets.
