Flock Camera Sightings Across Yakima County Reported by Drivers

Flock license plate readers are used by police departments across the county, and the Yakima City Council approved its use in November 2023. It only takes a picture of the back of the vehicle, not the person or people inside the car.

How Does a Flock Camera License Plate Reader Really Work?

If you've committed a crime, police departments can type in your license plate number and see if it comes up in their system. Police Captain Jay Seely told 1280 NewsTalk KIT News Director Lance Tormey that "they have been a game changer for helping to solve crimes" in the city.

A new website aims to keep the public informed of some of these previously unannounced locations. Curiosity got the best of me, so I went to the deflock.me to see some of the locations reported by Yakima County drivers (see a list of reported locations below).

Some Yakima County Residents Are Raising Flock Camera Concerns

During a Yakima City Council meeting held on January 20, 2026, Zillah resident and software engineer Morgan Humes gave a heartfelt speech during public comments expressing his concern that Flock cameras could be expanding their intended use.

Humes said he believes they are now being used as "an avenue to track people and our whereabouts...and [our right to privacy] is something we should not be giving up..."

Driver-Reported Flock Camera Sightings

Yakima Police Chief Shawn Boyle says there are dozens of these in at least 87 unidentified places in the city. Community members using crowdsourced data have reported sightings of automated license plate Flock camera readers in locations throughout the city and in Yakima County.

Here's a few spots listed on the map. I was able to verify that at least one of these locations are correct by using recent pics from Google Maps.
