National Pet Day, What’s The Most Popular In The Pacific NW?

Bow Wow, Meow, Croak, Caw, Hiss, Chirp, and Grugle !  Whew!  Does that cover it all?

Howdy from all our pets on this April 11th, National Pet Day !  The Ettl home has two fish, adopted sister cats, and two rescue dogs.

What About The Second Tier Of Pets

In the past, we've had birds and we also had a couple of guinea pigs until they chewed the buttons off my TV remote, then they had to go!   (I am not down with reptiles or amphibians as household pets, either)

But for this special day, let's take dogs and cats off the table.  (In fact, I wish my cats would stay off the table... and the counter... and out of the plants and fish tank and...)

What I mean by that is we know Yakima is a dog-loving kind of town. I have had the privilege of participating in a number of televised Humane Society fundraisers and made dozens of posts about dogs and cats over the years.

Is Your Pet Trending On Google

What caught my eye this NAtional Pets Day is the popularity of using Google Trends to determine what pets -besides cats & dogs- people in the 50 states are researching.  The assumption is that these would be the second tier of most favorite pets in the country.

USA Today reports that Bearded dragons dominated searches from the South, while guinea pigs were popular from coast to coast.  And New Mexico stood out as the only state where hamsters were the state's most searched pet over the past year.

So what does the Google Mothership show as our Pet's "Plan B" in the Pacific Northwest?

. The folks at the National Calendar (who come up with a lot of these special days) offer some tips for improved pet patronship.

Tips For National Pet Day

• Go through your "forever" family member’s toys. Throw away any items that are no longer safe.
• Maintain your pet-friendly home. Keep cords and toxins secure from your four-legged friends. This includes phone chargers.
• Verify when vaccinations are due and schedule an appointment to update if they are due.
• Check collars to ensure tags are secure and numbers are current.
• Take supplies to pets in shelters.
• Help a friend who is recovering from an illness with their pets.
• Adopt a pet.
