I frequent Spokane pretty regularly and when we're in town, or anywhere out of town, really, we have a simple rule. If we go out to eat, we'll eat at a place we don't have in town.

Several times we drive by this place called The Onion Taphouse and Grill. We usually disregarded it as 'probably just another cookie-cutter-type restaurant' but this time we figured we should actually give it a shot. I'm so glad we did.

All previous assumptions were immediately thrown out the window soon as we stepped in.

When I'm enjoying a new restaurant outside of town I love to enjoy a local craft ale. Any restaurant that has a separate menu featuring every draft beer they have on hand, all separated by styles is always good news for me. Never mind the soup or salad, I had a hard enough time deciding which hazy IPA I wanted.

Looking at the appetizers, we noticed something very unique to this area that we also had to try. They had a couple of dishes that featured a melty Cougar Gold cheese dip. We had to try that.

Although this place is legendary for their gourmet burgers, claiming they were the first to bring them to Spokane back in 1978 (and I have no reason to doubt them) we ended up ordering a variety of a fish and chips-type plate that had different fish, shrimp and fries. No complains from any of us.

With so many other menu options it'll definitely give us a reason to return next time we're in town.

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
