Will ‘American Idol’ Return for Season 3?
When ABC previously announced the shows that will be renewed and canceled for the upcoming year, American Idol was on neither initial list. Will the iconic reality singing competition return for another season?
After much speculation, the show itself announced its return for Season 3! Advisor Bobby Bones tweeted the announcement with the hand clapping emoji on Monday (May 13).
What's surprising is the fact that none of this year's judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — tweeted anything about the renewal. Host Ryan Seacrest hasn't commented on the show's renewal either. Seacrest has been hosting the show since its inception and Bryan, Perry, and Richie have been on the judging panel for both of Idol's seasons since ABC announced it was reviving the show.
American Idol had an initial run of fourteen seasons on Fox before another two on ABC. ABC picked up American Idol once Fox canceled it in 2016.
Watch: Who Is Laine Hardy?
Variety has reported that Season 3's judging panel is not finalized, which could explain why the judges and host are radio silent. Perry made headlines back in 2017 when she signed onto the show for a reported $25 million a year. TVLine has reported that the network has made offers to all three judges to return, though no deals have been made yet.
Seacrest has more ties to ABC than just American Idol; he also hosts the daytime talk show Live With Kelly & Ryan.
The finale of American Idol airs on Sunday (May 19) at 8 PM ET, when we will learn who the next American Idol champion will be. Alejandro Aranda, Madison VanDenburg and Laine Hardy are the three remaining contestants who will compete for the crown in 2019.
