Sign language is one of those skills that just looks fun. Many mothers (and fathers) learn a few words to help with their baby's development. Simple words like 'more', 'eat', 'drink', 'milk', and words like that. To some, it could just be a new skill that can help them communicate with others from across the room without having to shout.

American Sign Language is fun and can be fun to learn, but where does one take sign language classes. Sure, there's YouTube, but it's not exactly the same as having an instructor to ask questions or interact with the rest of the class.

Yakima Valley Libraries are going to teach American Sign Language (ASL) to anyone who would like to learn.

Sign Language in Yakima

You may know someone who uses ASL. I'm sure if you don't, I bet you know someone who knows someone who does. It'd be a fun way to learn a new skill.

You can learn the basics of American Sign Language at a beginner-level at the Yakima Public Libraries.

They won't even expect you to know the alphabet already. If you do, great! If you don't, I'm pretty sure it'll be one of the first things you'll learn.

No registration needed and you don't even need experience in ASL at any level. Just show up and have fun and see where it takes you.

ASL Classes at the Union Gap Library

These classes are held at the Union Gap Library (108 W. Ahtanum) starting January 8th and the 2nd one will be on January 22nd. These will be the second and fourth Thursday of each month after that.

These are only an hour long starting at 6 p.m. and going until 7 p.m.
