With Yakima's Biggest Yard Sale coming this Saturday (May 13), you may hear a few of these words being tossed around. If you're not familiar with some of them, I'll try to explain.

Antique
This term is specifically used for items that are worth more sometimes, based on the fact that they're very, very old. You'll find plenty of these.

Vintage
Not quite on the "antique" level, but vintage is like 'old school cool'. Something that was maybe pretty popular for its time.

As Is
If you see something labeled as such, it means it may not be 100 percent working and might even be missing parts. What you see is what you get.

Haggling / Bargaining / Dickering
The art of talking someone down in price.

Barter
In lieu of spending money, this is using an item to trade for another item.

Booth / Stall
A seller's area for displaying items.

Early Bird
The people who show up before the sale starts in hopes to find items before more people show up on time.

Fake / Knockoff
Not the original. It might look like it and work the same way, but it's not authentic.

Firm
The price is what it is and there's no changing it. No haggling allowed.

Restyle
This is when someone takes an item and makes it look different. Maybe they take a basic table or bench and repaint it or add something to it so it's still a table or bench, but has a different look to it.

Upcycle
Different from restyling, they take an item and change it completely. For instance, taking an old TV and turning it into a fish tank.

Like New
A fancy word for "used" but closer to "gently used." It looks new, but has been used.

New in Box
This is an item that's still new and has the box it came in.

OBO
"Or Best Offer." If you see something marked with a price and OBO next to it, it means they'll happily sell it at that price, but are willing to hear other offers.

I hope these help. Make sure you join us at Yakima's Biggest Yard Sale this Saturday (May 13) at the Perry Tech parking lot. It's sponsored by Goodwill of Yakima, Union Gap, Selah and Ellensburg.

Gates open at 8 a.m. -- RSVP on the event page on Facebook.
