• Ag producers and commodity groups have been applauding President Obama’s announcement to reduce the barriers with Cuba.

Groups like the National Association of Wheat Growers are hoping that embargoes are eased allowing for renewed trade.

Cuba is a non-wheat producing country and are the largest wheat purchaser in the Caribbean. Cuba could import at least 500,000 metric tons of wheat from the United States each year but has not purchased U.S. wheat since 2011.

This is obviously a small first step but ag groups are excited about future possibilities.

  • Growing Matters has again released more of their study on neonicitinoids.

The results of the study that found neonicotinoids significantly increase yields of major crops.

The research used a meta-analysis approach to assemble existing data from more than 1,500 field studies conducted over 15 years in the following crops: corn wheat, canola, potato and tomato among others. It also included a projection that without neonicotinoids, growers of major commodity crops would incur cost increases of $848 million per year.
