Getting Pulled Over in WA… Immediately or When It’s Safe?
I was watching this video of a police officer pulling over an FBI contractor when the police officer said something I was confused by.
When the cop asked him what he learned in driving school about getting pulled over, the driver said to pull over when it was safe. The cop corrected him to say he was wrong and you're supposed to pull over immediately.
I always heard to pull over when it was safe, too. Was I wrong or was this cop just trying to abuse his power?
Here's what I found.
Washington State Office of the Attorney General listed both as two probabilities. I mean, naturally, if you can pull over immediately, that's the best bet. But let's say it's on a two-lane road and there's an intersection coming up that's not as utilized, it would make sense to get off the main road to a place where you're not obstructing traffic.
Well, that didn't exactly answer my question so, like a good neighbor, I asked State Farm and here's what they said.
Slowly pull over. Use your turn signal and proceed to a safe location along the right side of the road. If the location seems dangerous, continue driving until you find a safe, well-lit place to stop, but turn on your hazard lights to indicate you see the officer. As long as it's clear that you intend to pull over, most officers will understand.
So, yes, pull over immediately if you can. However, if it's not safe, you could be causing a lot more bad than good if you just pull over on a one-lane road blocking everyone until the traffic stop has completed. But don't rush to find a place, either. If you have your turn signal on and drive slowly with intent to pull over, I'd hope you'd be fine.

To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.

Stacker used data from the 2020 County Health Rankings to rank every state's average life expectancy from lowest to highest. The 2020 County Health Rankings values were calculated using mortality counts from the 2016-2018 National Center for Health Statistics. The U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey and America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2019 data were also used to provide demographics on the senior population of each state and the state's rank on senior health care, respectively.

Using March 2019 data from the Social Security Administration, Stacker compiled a list of the most popular names in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C., according to their 2018 SSA rankings. The top five boy names and top five girl names are listed for each state, as well as the number of babies born in 2018 with that name. Historically common names like Michael only made the top five in three states, while the less common name Harper ranks in the top five for 22 states.
