Who is Star-Lord’s Father? James Gunn on the Big Question For ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2′

Star Lord Peter Quill Father Guardians 2
Marvel

One of the big cliffhangers teased at the end of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ was the identity of Star-Lord’s father. This left me slightly confused in the theater considering Quill’s father in the comics – J’son – was widely known and largely uninteresting. But, director James Gunn is going on the record as saying that ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2‘ will veer from comic book canon and create a new identity for Peter Quill, including a new dad. So, who is Star-Lord’s father?

Gunn wouldn’t spill the beans while talking to Empire saying, “It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much.” That’s not altogether surprising considering the amount of effort spent teasing a reveal; most people have no idea who J’son is, nor would they be impressed if they found out he was Star-Lord’s father. Gunn and Marvel are going in a different direction and he offered up some hints on the new identity:

There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us. That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff.

Supposedly, the only people who know who Star-Lord’s father is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are Gunn, Kevin Feige, Michael Rooker (who plays Yondu) and Sean Gunn (who played Yondu’s right-hand man Kraglin and is James’ younger brother). It’s interesting that they’re keeping even Chris Pratt out of the loop, but it’s understandable why. It’s revealed that both Yondu and Kraglin know the identity of Star-Lord’s father, so it only makes sense that the actors should know as well and vice versa for Chris Pratt.

But, OK, why you’re here is because YOU want to know who Star-Lord’s father is. And…well, we don’t really know, but here are a few guesses.

Adam Warlock is a possibility, considering that they really, sorta need him to be involved if they’re truly going to follow the Infinity Gauntlet storyline with Thanos and ‘Avengers 3.’ Of course, Adam Warlock doesn’t really fit the bill, at least as far as he’s written in the comics. Warlock, originally known as “Him,” was a superhumanly powerful humanoid created by a group of scientists known as The Enclave who were looking to create a perfect race of human beings without sin. This “perfect human” rebelled against his creators and traveled into space, coming into possession of the soul gem, later finding out Thanos is working to obtain all the Infinity gems and recruits The Avengers to help stop him (among other things we’re leaving out so as not to completely bore you). What’s not in his history is any time spent on Earth, romancing single ladies and fathering children.

A more likely possibility is Starfox. One of The Eternals (a neat way to fully introduce this race of superhumans into the MCU), Starfox is actually the brother of Thanos and, in contrast to his crazy bro, is “a fun-loving, carefree womanizer and adventurer” (according to the Marvel Wiki page). Sound like someone you know? It also jives a little bit with what Quill’s mother told him about his father before he died: that he was an “angel.” Starfox is hardly an angel as far as behavior goes, but being an Eternal is certainly close enough as far as Earthlings go.

Again, these are just guesses and it’s possible Gunn and Marvel have a big left turn in store for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2′ and the MCU.

One final interesting note from Gunn on ‘Guardians 2′ – don’t expect a ton of Thanos in that movie either. “Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos.”
