America Observes Veterans Day, Honors Servicemembers [PHOTOS]

Across the country on Monday, Americans observed Veterans Day, commemorating the service of its military men and women, active and retired, or killed in action.

At Arlington National Cemetery, President Obama continued the tradition of laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns, and spoke briefly thanking veterans for their service. In particular, he described how the country must never forget the sacrifices made by its soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, and also their families.

The president also honored Richard Overton, who at 107 years old is believed to be America’s oldest living veteran. Overton served in the South Pacific during World War II.

In New York, the country’s largest Veterans Day parade, known as America’s Parade, featured Grand Marshal Ann E. Dunwoody, the first woman to attain four-star-general status. Dallas also held a parade, one that saw 25,000 spectators and 150 new enlistees.

Those parades are just two of the numerous events being held today. The Veterans Department has put together a map of Veterans Day celebrations across the country.
