5 Reasons to Watch ‘SpongeBob: The Musical’ at Eisenhower High School
I caught the first showing of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical performed by the IKE Players at Eisenhower High School. I had a great time and everyone in the audience did as well. They're only performing this show 8 times (7, as I'm writing this) so make sure you don't miss out. Here are 5 reasons you should watch SpongeBob: The Musical.
The student who played SpongeBob did an amazing job. I mean, to be fair, everyone did amazing. Patrick, Sandy, Squidward... everyone did amazing, but the who played SpongeBob was all high-octane energy the entire performance. Running around on stage and jumping all around while dancing and singing can't be easy for anyone.
The creative use of props is, in a lot of ways, genius. From beach balls being used as boulders and Gary, SpongeBob's pet snail, riding in on a skateboard made it fun to see what they'd do next.
The creative use of the orchestra pit makes them involved. Often times you'll hear the band, but not often see them. This is still the case but with references and sometimes items being passed between the pit to the stage and vice versa, it's nice to see the people you can't see but are such an integral part of any musical being included.
I have to give it up to the supporting cast. These are the background singers, sometimes the human props and often times they don't have a name in the show because they play so many roles. In one scene they're just someone walking by while singing and, the next time you see them, they're in a new costume as someone else. This happens to several of the stage performers several times throughout the show. With all those quick costume changes, it's a lot going on for a high school production.
If you're a fan of SpongeBob SquarePants and have seen every episode, or at least the first few seasons, you'll recognize many jokes and references. It's funny without needing to know any backstory but if you are familiar with the show you'll love the references.
If can, check out SpongeBob: The Musical at IKE before it's too late.
