On Friday, June 14th, at noon in the Tieton City Square, 607 Maple Street, Tieton, WA, the 8th Annual Flag Day Event for the Highland community will be held. This event honors the men and women of the communities of Naches Heights, Cowiche and Tieton who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces. Although the event serves to honor all area veterans, each year a number of veterans are selected for special recognition of their service. Special presentations will be made to this year's honorees: Scott Ennis and Otto Cruz. All area veterans are invited and encouraged to attend.

Highlighting the event each year is the "Reading of the Names." The names of all those who have served in the military are read during the program to honor their service to our country. More than 600 names will be read at this year's event, which includes the names of Highland area veterans from the past and present. Another crowd favorite is the Posting of the Colors, the Rifle Salute, and the playing of "Taps," all of which will be provided by VFW Post #379. Scout Troop 263 will participate in this year’s event as the lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. Bella Dagdagun, a young fiddler, will pay tribute to our nation by playing the National Anthem. Some WWII military jeeps will be at the event.

This year’s keynote speaker is Lt. Col Brian Winter (Ret.), former Battalion Commander, 4th Tank Battalion. We are honored to have Col. Winter, who is from the Yakima Valley, at this year’s event.

This is a free event and the general public is encouraged to attend. If you are a veteran who would like their name read at the event or you know a veteran whose name you would like read, please feel free to contact us and provide us your information.

The event founder/organizer is Norma Joiner. She can be contacted at (509) 673-2055 for more information.
