Yakima Needs Its Own Terrible Orchestra
A terrible idea on paper can sometimes make the greatest moments and adventures for people, and I think Yakima has the room and undeveloped talent to do one of these things. And that is a ‘Terrible Orchestra’. Let’s discuss below.
The Terrible Orchestra Origins
My friend Emily shared a fun and heartfelt story about adults coming together and learning music in a school setting. As I read about it on KPBS.org, my face lit up, I smiled, and then laughed out loud, remembering our time in Naches band class (Emily played the flute, I mainly played the Trombone).
The story was focused on the Coronado Terrible Orchestra (in San Diego, California), which got its inspiration from the Fort Wayne Terrible Orchestra which got its idea from the Really Terrible Orchestra of Scotland.
“It began with our envying the pleasure of our children gained from Music. And as nobody else would have us, we formed our own orchestra.” – The Really Terrible Orchestra Founder, Alexander “Sandy” McCall Smith.
It has worked in so many places, why not here in Yakima? There are so many places for adults to do things that are “judgment-free”, why not get a group together and learn music with each other? It sounds like a fun, possibly audibly painful, idea to build a new community.

The Yakima Terrible Orchestra?
Yakima has a fantastic orchestra with the Yakima Symphony Orchestra that performs at the Yakima Capitol Theatre, I think there's room to explore the flipside of the coin.
This can work, I’ve seen it in person when comedian Dave Attell gave everyone at a show a recorder, and we all played Hot Cross Buns. It was horrible, but fun, and by the 8th run through, you could clearly hear Three Blind Mice.
