Officers spotted and stopped the stolen vehicle that's when Zimmerman fled

Authorities say officers spotted a stolen vehicle in the 1200 block of North 1st Street on May 30. An officer tried to contact the driver, identified as 30-year-old Zachary Zimmerman but Zimmerman fled the vehicle carrying a gun. As police chased him Zimmerman fired shots at officers who returned fire and struck Zimmerman. No officers were injured. Zimmerman was arrested and then taken to a Yakima hospital. He was transferred to Harborview Medical Center for further treatment and has since been released after being treated for multiple gunshot wounds.

Zimmerman is now in jail facing charges

Zimmerman is now sitting in the Yakima County jail. In a warrant issued by the Yakima County Prosecutors Office while Zimmerman was still in the hospital charged him with First-Degree Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle.
The two officers involved in the shooting remain on administrative leave as the investigation continues by the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit. The unit is made up of officers from agencies up and down the Yakima Valley to insure the investigation is fair and complete.
The final decision as to if the officers were justified in the shooting will be made by the Yakima County Prosecutors Office.
