Northwest Harvest is about to help a lot more people who are hungry in Yakima County. Officials from Northwest Harvest on Wednesday announced plans for a new food distribution center to be built in Yakima. The new facility which will include a community market/free grocery store will be built in a large field at Fruitvale Blvd. and North 20th Avenue. During a press conference to announce details of the center Thomas Reynolds, Northwest Harvest CEO was joined by Derek Sandison , Washington State Department of Agriculture Director, Carmen Mendez , Northwest Harvest Sr. Manager, Hunger Response Network & Distribution and Esther Magasis, Yakima County Director of Human Services.
Plans call for a 200,000 square foot distribution center and a 4,000 square foot community market/free grocery store. The center create 40 new jobs in the area as well. The center will be Northwest Harvest's main hub of distribution in central Washington State located in the heart of the region that produces much of the food for Washington State. The officials say the new center will expand food access and distribution around the state. Construction is expected to start this spring.
Northwest Harvest helps to fill the shelves of food banks in Yakima and throughout central Washington. A press release says "Northwest Harvest strives to end hunger and address the root causes of poverty – supporting a statewide network of 375 food banks, meal programs, and high-need schools. Focused on improving equity in our food system, Northwest Harvest believes everyone in Washington should have consistent access to nutritious food that feeds the body, mind, and spirit."

The 2020 County Health Rankings values were calculated using mortality counts from the 2016-2018 National Center for Health Statistics. The U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey and America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2019 data were also used to provide demographics on the senior population of each state and the state's rank on senior health care, respectively.
